This is my first chance to speak out against drunk driving. Thank you for the opportunity.
My son, Iori, was suddenly hit by a car. While riding his bicycle home, he was hit head-on by a car that had swerved out of its lane. He smashed the windshield, and was thrown on top of the car.
The driver was drunk and driving in reverse for 100 meters without hitting the brakes. He noticed another car and turned the wheel to protect himself. At that moment Iori’s body was flung from the car, hit the oncoming car, and landed in the street.
Some people in the neighborhood ran up to give him a cardiac massage, however the drunk driver began to spew obscenities and tried to kick the body into an upright position. So there was nothing they could do. In the police car, the drunk driver said, “It was the punks fate.”
Thinking about Iori breaks my heart.
Iori wrote that he wanted to continue bike racing at college in his future plans. It was not only Iori’s life that changed. It was also his family, friends, and all the people he’d touched with his life. Iori wasn’t the only victim. The drunk driver’s wife was pregnant, but got an abortion. They got divorced and their children were forced to change their environment and suffered quite a lot.
There is no third party when it comes to drunk driving. No happiness can come from it. No matter how much you regret it, no matter how much you try to make it right, the dead cannot be brought back to life.
There is no limit to the power of the individual. So, in an effort to not produce any more perpetrators or victims, please lend me your strength. Please spread the word about the dangers of drinking and driving; ask people to think about when driving home the morning after drinking to please think more about how much they drank before driving. Let’s share our knowledge so there are no more tragedies. Let’s stop drunk driving with love. If we can all work together, we can make a happier world.
